Toolysite

How Toolysite handles your files and data

Short answer: most of our tools work inside your browser, so your file never leaves your device. A few tools need our server, and for those the file is uploaded, processed and deleted automatically within about an hour. This page lists which is which, so you can decide before you open a file.

1. Browser tools (most of them)

Tools such as Merge PDF, Split PDF, Compress PDF, the image resizer, compressor and cropper, QR and barcode generators, calculators, text and developer tools run as JavaScript in your browser. Your file is read from your device, changed in memory and saved back to your device. It is not sent to Toolysite.

Video and audio tools run FFmpeg inside your browser. The first time you use one, the browser downloads the video engine (about 31 MB) from Toolysite and keeps it for next time. Your video itself is not uploaded.

2. Cloud tools (a few)

Some jobs are too heavy or need software that cannot run in a browser. For these, the tool page says "cloud tool". Your file travels over an encrypted connection, is processed on our server, and is deleted automatically within about one hour. Examples include the Image Converter, Background Remover, HEIC to JPG, Image to Text, PDF to Images, HTML to PDF, PDF to PDF/A, Flatten PDF and Video Reverser. If a document is confidential, prefer a browser tool for the same job where one exists, and the tool page usually points to it.

3. Lookup tools that contact another service

A few tools cannot work without the internet. They tell you what is sent before they do it:

4. Things we keep on your device only

Some tools remember your work in your own browser so it is there next time: for example the Online Notepad, Expense Tracker, Flashcard Maker and Countdown Date Widget. That data stays on your device, is not uploaded, and disappears if you clear site data. Download a copy if it matters.

5. Downloads, accounts and ads

As a guest or on the free plan, downloads from some tools may include a small Toolysite.com notice. Paid plans download without it. The Privacy Policy explains accounts, cookies, advertising and your choices, including the "Privacy choices" link in the site footer: read the Privacy Policy.

How to check for yourself

  1. Open the tool page, then open your browser's developer tools (F12) and choose the Network tab.
  2. Choose a file and run the tool.
  3. For a browser tool you will not see your file being sent to a server. For a cloud tool you will see an upload, and the page told you so beforehand.

You can also run a browser tool with your internet switched off after the page has loaded. If it still works, nothing needed a server.
